Introduction

Welcome Ladies and Gentlemen to year four of RPI Pep Band Alumni and Friends. Our third year has seen a lot of growth, both in membership and features. We've welcomed several new members to our staff, created a brand new web space, and have celebrated another year of successful alumni events. Year four looks to be even more exciting. So with Freakout just around the corner, let's get this thing started!

Ice is Nice, But Team Hovers at .500

Another year, another up and down season for men's hockey fans. Seems like that's the trademark of RPI hockey the last few years. This year has been especially streaky. An exhibition win was followed by two losses in the Nye Frontier Classic. Upon returning to the east coast the Engineers put up a four game win streak including victories over Michigan Tech and BU. Over the next eleven games the team would go 4-4-3 heading into Christmas break.

Coming back from the layoff, the team has looked rusty, dropping both games of the Ohio Hockey Classic (for a 1-5-0 record in tournament games this season). With the last of their non-conference games behind them RPI returned to home ice where they were pummled late by Dartmouth, and barely hung on for a win against ECACHL top team Harvard. Now the pressure is on, with 14 straight ECACHL contests between now and the playoffs. Currently, RPI is just one point up on Union and newcommer Quinnipiac for the last home ice spot in the first round

Highlights in the coming weeks include a webcast of the Clarkson home game, a home and home weekend vs. Union on February 3rd and 4th, Freakout on February 11th against Brown, and the final weekend of the regular season where RPI will host Cornell and Colgate. After that, all eyes will be on the bench as Coach Fridgen's contract expires at the end of this season.

Football Season Ends With ECAC Bowl Victory

It was an up and down year for the Engineers, but with youth at some of the key positions that was to be expected. A couple of easy non-conference wins set the stage for a tough early season game against Hobart. After falling behind big, the Engineers fought back to tie the game and force overtime, only to lose in triple overtime.

With the Engineers playing catchup in the league, they went on to win their next 5 games, including the Shot Glass Trophy game against Coast Guard and the Transit Trophy Game against WPI. A possible NCAA berth was on the line for the last regular season game against archrival Union. Unfortunately, the back and forth affair saw Union pull ahead late and hold on to win and retain the Dutchmen Shoes.

With a 7-2 overall mark, the Engineers were invited to the ECAC Northwest Bowl game against old rival St. John Fisher. The Engineers prevailed in that to finish 8-2 and set the stage for next year. With most of the offense returning, including D3football.com National First Team All American TE Jon Branche, hopes are high for a return to the NCAA stage for next year.

D1 Women Having Impressive Start

Despite having arguably one of the easiest schedules in Division I, the women's hockey team stormed out of the gate in their first season in D-I. The Engineers finished the first semester of their schedule with an unexpected 9-1-2 record against American schools and a 2-0 exhibition record against Canadian schools. Highlights include starting the season on an 11 game unbeaten streak, wins over Colgate and fellow first year program Robert Morris on the road and another first year program, Boston University at home, and ties to Colgate and Maine. The only loss so far this season came on the road to an experienced Maine squad.

Leading the way for RPI are junior captain Sarah Daniel and freshman forward Nicole McDonald. Each has nine goals on the season to share the team lead. Freshman defenseman Melanie Guillemette leads the team with 10 assists. Senior Rosina Schiff started the season in net, going 2-0-1 but a knee injury kept her out of action for a couple of weeks and allowed freshmen Emily Ford and Ashley Mayr to get some experience. Both stepped up to the task, Ford going 3-0-0 and Mayr going 3-0-1. Each also picked up an exhibition win against Brock and McGill respectively.

The second half of the season only gets harder for the Engineers with road games against Connecticut, Wayne State, Vermont, and nationally ranked Clarkson. RPI also has home contests against Union, Quinnipiac, and Division III powerhouse Plattsburgh.

Freakout 2006 vs Brown!

With just over a month 'till Freakout, it's time to start making your travel plans! This year's event takes place on Saturday February 11th and promises to be even better than 2005. Lots of information to pass along, so here we go:

4th Annual Pre-Freakout Breakfast - Latham 76 Diner - 9:00am
We'll be starting this year's festivities at Latham 76 again this year. They've been very accomodating in the past and we're looking forward to starting our morning off there this year. We'll be leaving from here and going directly to rehearsal.

Pep Band Rehearsal - West Hall 326 - 10:30am
Continuing with tradition, the alums will be joining the band for rehearsal at West Hall. This will give everyone a chance to find those chops they haven't used since PBAN3! Rehearsal normally lasts 'till 12:30pm.

Hockey Alumni Game - Houston Fieldhouse - 12:00pm
This is an annual tradition for alumni of the men's hockey team. Many old favorites will attend, as well as some of the newer alums that may not be playing professionally. It's a fun game to watch and will certainly bring back memories. This event is free to the public.

Alumni Lasagna Dinner - Conte Residence (1584 Tibbits Ave) - 3:15pm
Brendan Conte '02 has graciously opened his home to us this year. There will be many kinds of lasagna available, allong with other assorted goodies. This is the same site where the afterparty was held last year. There is no cover, but donations will not be turned away. We will head from here to the game sometime, possibly even (dare I say it) MARCHING up to the fieldhouse. Directions to Brendan's are listed below.

Freakout 2006 vs Brown! - Houston Fieldhouse - 6:15pm
This is the main event. The game we've been waiting for since the season began! Conductors wishing to take a turn on the podium should let conductor Tim know ASAP (and can let us know when they RSVP). The game will most likely be followed by broomball/ice soccer/kick-the-stuffed-animal-around-the-ice-while-trying-not-to-fall-and-break-anything.

After Party! - Conte Residence (1584 Tibbits Ave) - 9:45pm
One of the nice things about having the Lasagna Dinner at the Conte Residence is that you can leave all your stuff there and pick it up at the After Party! Brendan and Sarah will be going all out for this year's after-party, and we're looking forward to seeing what concoctions come out of the kitchen this year. Again, there is no cover, but donations will not be turned away.

Ice House attendees can park at the Heffner Alumni House and take a free shuttle to the doors of the Houston Field House. After the game, the shuttle will take you back to the Heffner Alumni House to meet the members and coaching staff of the Men's Varsity Hockey Team and enjoy a cash bar, warm beverages, and desserts.

A limited number of tickets for the hockey game are available on a first-come, first-served basis to attendees of the Ice House. Register no later than Friday, February 3, 2006 at www.alumni.rpi.edu/hockey or contact Peter Pedone at pedonp@rpi.edu for a registration form.

Pep Band Stories

Pep Band Stories will return next issue. If you have a story you'd like to share, please let us know at newsletter@rpipepbandalumni.org.

Life Updates

December was a busy month for life updates. First, Karen Landry '03 wrote in telling us of some very happy news. On December 24th, 2005, her boyfriend Charlie Hayden popped the question in front of both sets of parents! Talk about pressure. Since she wrote in to tell us I think it's safe to say she said yes! No date has been set for the big day.

Some other news comes from closer to home, as Adam Payne '00 (Chris' Brother-in-law and former roomate) is now a daddy. Briana Ariel was born on December 27th. Briana is the couple's first. Also in baby news, we have some belated congratulations for Michael ('94) and Lisa Alpert. The couple's first child, a little girl named Emma, was born on July 12th 2005. Jeez, we've got future pep band members popping up all over the place!

If you have something you'd like to share, be it a new job or a new kid, please let us know at newsletter@rpipepbandalumni.org.

From The Managers

There's not too much new in the pep band. we've decided on our away games this semester. we'll be traveling to Princeton/Quinnipiac for our overnight and to Harvard for our day trip. If any alumni can make it out to any of the games that would be great. If not we hope to see everyone here come freakout.

AJ and Neil
